Fixed a lot of little nagging issues here. All downloads are now working again. I'll be installing the arcade and a few new themes soon. :)

"SMF Mods Docs"

Renamed boards:

"SMF Docs" to "SMF and Mods Docs"

Moved topics:

From "SMF Mods Docs" to "SMF and Mods Docs"

Created new board:

I was working on a theme similar to this with the same images and was supposed to copy the images from this one to the other. But...I guess I moved them instead.  :baghead:

It should be all fixed now but if you notice any missing images let me know.

skhilled.net recipe forum is now braisedbutt.com as the link for my recipe forum since it is a food related name and fits better than skhilled.net. It is also now a phpBB forum instead of SMF.

As you can see, I've made a few changes for the New Year!

1.  Tinyportal has been replaced with Simpleportal. The hardest part (not difficult) is converting the TP Articles to SP Pages. If anyone wishes to make the change to SP let me know and I'll be glad to help make the transition a lot easier for you.

2.  Because SP does not have a downloads integrated into it I've installed the Downloads Systems. Please bear with me as I add the arcade, etc. to the downloads...they are not available yet. I'm a tad busy over the Holidays and all.

3.  The arcade has been removed. I only installed it here for testing a few fixes I had implemented. If you wish to play an arcade, you are welcome to play at my sister site:

https://braisedbutt.com (https://braisedbutt.com)

It is a phpBB site but the arcade is much better and there will be a LOT more games installed eventually. Sometime in the new year we plan to make bridges for other forums, blogs and cms, like SMF, WP, etc. Stay tuned. ;)

4.  A new theme has been installed, "Total Blue". You are still able to choose the old themes from your Profile, if you'd like.

5.  Avea Media may be removed in favor of Simple Audio Video Embedder. An image gallery is not needed here and the only reason I installed it is for embedded videos...we'll see...

6.  Some of the badges and a few other images may be missing. They will be replaced shortly. :)

There may be more changes in the coming new year! If you have any problems, please create a topic detailing your comments and/or concerns.

7.  A Recent Topics block has been added to the front page at the bottom of te center blocks.

8.  ...and you may have noticed new images here. There will celebrate or depict Holidays or current events here in the USA or around the world!

The last, original SMF Arcade version 2.5 RC2 and the "updated" version I made (just cosmetic fixes to the .css files) v2.6 RC1 are now in the downloads.

There is now a new board category called "Computer Love". This category contains the following boards:

Projects (https://www.docskillz.com/docs/index.php?board=49.0) - For any PC, software, themes, testing, or coding you may be doing.

Linux General Chat (https://www.docskillz.com/docs/index.php?board=48.0) - For anything about Linux that is not related to Suse or Ubuntu.

Suse (https://www.docskillz.com/docs/index.php?board=47.0) - For all this about Suse.

Ubuntu (https://www.docskillz.com/docs/index.php?board=46.0) - For all things about Ubuntu.

I have moved all recent topics about computers, software, testing, and Linux to these boards. I've posted redirection links to easily find your topics. I'll remove the redirection links later.

When I get a little extra time...maybe this weekend, I'll be switching back to TP. I'll also be getting rid of Avea since it is no longer being supported and is filling my error log. It will be replaced with SMF Gallery and  Simple Audio Video Embedder.

It's coming along...slowly. We go to these speaking engagements and all of the other Vets have cards, books they sell, etc. and he has nothing. So, it's time we stepped up the game a bit. ;)

As far as the conversion goes, I'll need to create a test site and try it there first to make sure my articles will still work. I never delete my TP tables just in case I wanted to come back to TP later.

The shoutbox for Simple Portal is now disabled. For some reason it doesn't seem to like the SMF 2.0.12 upgrade.

Registered users can use the Chatz room.

EDIT: Created a new shoutbox and it seems to be working...

Registered users can still use the Chatz Room...

Nice, that's good to hear Steve.  You opting to use TP1.3? or 1.3R?

Edit: Dare I ask why you are changing portals again?  it's something that always intrigues me, why one gets chosen over another etc, and I know you've used both of those portals over the years.

Does seem strange if it's just stopped out of the blue like that with no announcement, there must be a valid reason for the absence.  Perhaps they had a team meltdown or something, but either way if it is ceasing I'd have thought one of the team would say something somewhere.  At the moment as there's nothing official, anything said can be pure speculation at this point.

I still use it, and it seems to be running OK.

Now I version I heard was SP forum got itself hacked, nd destroyed..Then I also heard, who ever maintains the site, had no backup to rely on..

It may be down, but I just checked the mod. list and SP has a new upgrade to 2.3.7

Was also modified back in August 2017.  http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1104

Why do they let things go like this.. I know SMF is hanging on by a thread I think, look how long we have wait for the 2.0 and it's still in beta for how many years now..I know a lot of the good Staff they had all packed it in and left..

They did get hacked a while back, I remember they announced it on their site. (only).  Not sure if they got hacked again after the site was put back up though. This was 17 June 2016, and it's been up for a good few months after.

Not sure if the hackers got hold of any of the users details from the database they tried to steal.

(Quote from the announcement.)
The hacker attempted to download our database, but as of yet we are not certain that it was successful. Regardless, it's possible that your usernames, emails and hashed passwords have been retrieved by the attacker.

Awhile back when they were still up, I made numerous attempts to sign in, never did get back in..

It's a shame the way we handle our forums.. I also have a older style of IPB, because of the Arcade, https://ronaldsarcade.com/ which Legionnaire took it over and keeps it updated.. The original owner, Originally created by Chris Kelly (sykoect) passed away last year, never had the Arcade, ready to pass on to anyone else, the forum domain ran out, we had no way of any knowledge of it, so it just went down. Not one person that knew him had any info..

But Legionnaire was one of the coders and keep it update and now we use his forum for downloads and updates..

The arcade has to run on the older version of IPB, it has never been upgraded to the newer IPB forum..to large a database to start over with..

My domains and forums, I have one person, that has my info. and can continue on with the boards..

That's pretty much what happened to Maxx's forum. Scrubmeister had to wait for the domain to be up for grabs via an auction and bid on it and got it. The other domain he just waited it out until he got it again.

Yup, he had to pay $80 for it, I think. Some cost way more than that. When I gave up skhilled.com it was going for a few thousand. I waited it out for a few years and got it back at a normal price.

I've been alerted by EyeCu that the files in the "Special Downloads" category of the Downloads were not working. So, I've begun uploading/fixing them. This will take awhile due to the size of them...300MB+.

v3arcade_part1.zip - uploaded and ready. I'll post more when the other 2 are fixed. Btw, there is a v3arcade_part3.zip that I've never uploaded and will be within the next day or two. ;)

v3arcade_part3.zip is uploading now...

EDIT: Done! Part 3 is a collection that I've had for many years and just adding to the downloads! May include some Adult games - 136 MB.

They did get hacked a while back, I remember they announced it on their site. (only).  Not sure if they got hacked again after the site was put back up though. This was 17 June 2016, and it's been up for a good few months after.

The current down time has nothing to do with hacking and the recent loss of data was due to a mistake that I made.
Approx. 5 weeks of posts and perhaps 25 files or so were lost (this is just a rough estimate).

The SP site will be back in the near future.
When the site is ready, one of the staff will likely make an announcement in the SMF Simple Portal thread.

The team is very glad to hear so many from the SMF community wanting the site back & we appreciate such a loyal user base.

Regards.

That's good news, it would be sad to see the loss of another great portal mod.  Regarding the hacking thing, that was just a response to Oldcrow's post, not a suggestion that it was hacked again.  Apologies if it came across that way. ;)

Another thing missing from SP is any avatar a user uploaded.
The files are still there but the members table column of avatar is void of local file upload values.
Anyone with an avatar that is external or from the forum avatar folder is still configured but for some unknown reason uploaded avatar specifics are gone.
I looked back at older db backups and they have the same issue.
These are the control panel backups & not phpmyadmin manual ones so I can only assume there is/was a bug in the control panel's code to backup the database.
Perhaps some character value in that column for local uploads that caused it to skip the value altogether (just a guess).
I will have to investigate further to figure it out but for now when SP comes back online, anyone whom uploaded an avatar will have to upload a new one.

Interesting, I'll make sure to do backups from phpmyadmin. I usually do, but sometimes I do cPanel backups. Do you know what version of cPanel is was cause they just had two upgrades recently. I can give you access to my VPS and you can test them there is needed.

Sinan just informed me that uploaded avatar paths are stored in the attachments table.
Therefore the data and files are there but not working for the moment.
This is something I will have to figure out prior to bringing SP back online.

Within the next week or so I'll be redoing this site. It has a few problems, mostly from a buildup of many files and folders over the years from moving from hosting to hosting. I've always done a full backup and I guess it took along all of their files each time.

I'm pretty sure some are outdated and may be causing conflicts. This is probably also why I had the problem with the double sites. LOL I'll update the mods as well. :)

I've set the server for this site to PHP 7.3 and so far, it works! If you experience any problems please let me know. If I find no problems, I'll start upgrading the other sites on the server too

Remember, you can always change your own PHP version in your cPanel, if needed. After the change it will take a minute or two to complete. During that time you may see "Service Unavailable" on your site until it completes. Then all should be good! ;)
Title: Re: Site Updates
Post by: lurkalot on August 17, 2019, 08:03:07 AM
PHP 7.3 ?  I'm now curious.  Does that mean you installed a mod, or modified 2.0.15 to run on 7.3, because 2.0.15 doesn't support it?  7.1 is the highest version it supports out of the box.

Edit:  I will say, it's bloody fast though. lol..
Title: Re: Site Updates
Post by: Skhilled on August 17, 2019, 08:24:48 AM
No modifications or changes were done. I just change it on the VPS, although, you should be able to change it in your cpanel if the hosting allows it. Basically, I was testing it to see if 7.2 and 7.3 would work or not. All sites on the server are currently set to 7.1 especially upon account creation. Again, they can be changed to use 7.2 or 7.3 if the user wishs.

I wanted to do it on my site first before trying it on others. 7.0 and older are now EOL and should not be used and should be uninstalled on the server.

EDIT: Please keep in mind that there may be some issues with certain mods, code, etc. which is why I'm doing this as a test here. I can change it back easily if there's a problem.

Just thought of this...but things like apache or php extensions or other server settings may also have an effect on if it works or not...

Ok, found out something. I've been noticing errors on my site related to the arcade for awhile now but thought it just needed updating. But there's more to it than that...

The errors state that the "create_function ()" is depreciated. After a search on Google it seems that it should be changed to "function ()". Now for the bad news...LOL There's tons of "create_function ()" in many files in many places through out SMF 2.0.15! They would all need to be changed but there's no telling what would happened if you did that. Not to mention the same for the mods and themes...

Maybe I'll play around with it on a test site and see what happens. ;)
Title: Re: Site Updates
Post by: lurkalot on August 17, 2019, 03:17:31 PM
Is was only depreciated since PHP7.2 onwards.  I dare say these things will eventually get updated by the time we're forced to move up.

I see Chen's site listed in the credits and it reminded me he did something like that and I've forgotten about it. Looks like they teamed up to make it. But Chen's site is down atm...
Title: Re: Site Updates
Post by: Chen Zhen on August 26, 2019, 08:06:44 PM

I am the one who wrote the entire script.
The license allows people to distribute it on their websites which is why he has it posted there.
I felt it was best to allow wide distribution of that mod/tool because a lot of hosts are upgrading their PHP (forced) & it's taking quite a long time for the SMF 2.1 branch to roll out a stable version.

My site was down due to a botched kernel update.
I had to reinstall backups 3.5 times to figure it out.
This is using FTP for files because I don't pay for host backups which takes a long time.
My host is pretty good though... they have some options to help recover data that is included in their cheaper limited support VPS packages.

They do allow 1 image backup for free but it requires a reboot of the OS after applying it.
Every time I rebooted it triggered the botched kernel update & made the system useless.
It took me a bit to figure out what it was & how to fix it.
Every time the system rebooted to apply its kernel update, it truncated the entire boot folder on the partition.
I had to use special commands to apply the kernel updates without a reboot.

If you ever have an issue like this, shoot me a PM at my site & I'll help you fix it.

Yes, I remember seeing it on your site now that you've mentioned it.

I've had the same problems awhile back trying to upgrade the kernel. I must've tried a dozen and a half times but could never get it to work properly without screwing things up. Fortunately, we have a backup system but only via FTP, atm. NFS and CIFS can be added for about $3/month. We have 100GB storage space.

I had to use Cent OS6 for a long time. We finally, were able to use Cent 7 but some other wanted/needed features can't be used without upgrading the kernel. It's been awhile since I've tried anything. We pretty much gave up on it and decided if we get a new server we'd get one that's already updated. LOL
Title: Re: Site Updates
Post by: Chen Zhen on August 27, 2019, 05:21:19 PM

When using yum update the kernel updates are usually automatically included.
You can make some file adjustments or commands to stop kernel updates but I wouldn't do that.
Next time I know to browse the list of updates and if I see a kernel update in the list, abort & do just the kernel update manually.
The procedure I used to update without a reboot seems to work.
Plus I can ensure that I make an image of my OS just before doing it.
Title: Re: Site Updates
Post by: Skhilled on August 28, 2019, 08:31:53 AM
I have an image too but it is only available once per month for free, I think. Otherwise, if I need it more than that I have to pay for it. It's been quite awhile since I've needed one and forget the exact details but something like that.

We do have a backup dedicated server but for some reason it stopped backing up the OS and we need to look into it. WHM, does backup the accounts on the main server and the backup server automatically. So, even if we lose the OS we still have the accounts backed up.

I would like to get the kernel updated cause there are some programs I wanted to play with but don't work because of that...like a personal email server and personal chat server. Getting tired of Google reading my emails and sending me emails asking about reviews for things I get.

EDIT: Btw, the PHP 7.2 Compatibility script at smfhacks only works with SMF 2.1 while yours only works with 2.0. I've installed the mod on https://skhilled.com/smftest to PHP 7.2 and it works without any errors! Yeah! I plan to install it here next.

I've forgotten to update this, been way too busy! That mod will give errors in your log depending on the other mods you have installed or if anything called that outdated code.

We've moved all of the accounts to the new dedicated server and believe we've got just about everything working as it should! We've got an updated OS with and updated kernel and now have double the RAM of the last server!
