Title: My MyBB Project
Post by: Skhilled on May 03, 2015, 04:26:58 PM
I have converted my old forum to phpBB. Now I'm not sure which way they are headed. This got me thinking about other software. MyBB seems like a good candidate...I thought about this when considering converting my site to phpBB.

Anyhoo, I'll take a copy of my DB and convert it to MyBB and then populate it with mods, etc. to see how it goes. I'll post my finding here. But first I need to redo this site just to get rid of some junk and get things working properly again.

+1 I'm finding it very nice, even out of the box has build in features most need mods for. I'm gonna do fresh install to the main root of the url I have a test set up on now, so I'm liking it very much they seem be move right along, looking forward to next version, but this one is very nice.

Thank Doc for getting me to look at this again at this point in time@! :)

more to come!

Maxx

You can also get the up to the minute updates they are working on at Github. I think it's the new 2.0 that will be released next but I'll need a bit to check this one out first.

First impressions...link to the site is now in the first post:

The portal sucks! LMAO It has a few blocks but you must code your own. The few blocks that it has are built into the mybb coding. There are a couple of portal plugins but they appear to be outdated. More on this later...

The coding of mybb seems simple. Some features that are built into SMF need to be installed as plugins. This keeps the coding simple but adds more work on the admin. Then they warn you about not adding too many plugins. :P

So far, I've added 2 themes (an easy process) which you must upload via FTP. You upload a .php file then enable it in the admin.

The same process goes for plugins but is also pretty easy. I've installed an arcade with 2 games. The arcade only accepts IBPPro and V3arcade games but they have the best games, imo. LOL Next, I'll install a gallery...

Support? I've read some of the topics and they do seem very friendly and DO NOT talk down to you nor treat you poorly like at the SMF support forum.  ???

Overall, a very good forum software and they are currently working on 2.0 which promises to be even better. But we'll have to wait and see...

Doc We will take it apart! :)

I'm am finding it has built in stuff that smf does not, especially spam and security stuff, the little portal built, is ok I guess if could use some work, but on the responsive theme it goes away when close the browser in or shrink the browser.
I f you think about it it has most every thing you really need in portal, surrounding the forum body and side panel. It a little bit of work for the admin but very specific in what you can do with the ACP.( I feel you have better control on things than with SMF. ) I'm very impressed with it so far, and it been along time sense I found something other than SMF that I like! )

Some / a few mods are out dated but this version fairy new and they seem to moving right along and ver 2.0 is in the works, so this maybe why?

Seem very solid stable and fast, clean and easy on the user or members!

Maxx

Yes, it does seems very stable. I have not tested the security yet. That is what I am going to work on next. Actually I should have did that first.  :baghead:

I will try one of their portals (may be outdated) and see what happens or try to code blocks myself when I finish testing other things. A portal is not needed but would make things a bit easier.

So far, I've installed an arcade, a gallery, and an audio video embedder...which all work well. I've also installed a blog and shoutbox which are not working properly. I can see the settings in the ACP but cannot make them show on the board so they can be used. I have found a newer version of MyBBlog on Github that I've just downloaded and will see if that works better.

Nope...Githug version still is te same. will need to contact support on these 2...

I've seen a few posts about adding a small piece of code to the template files but haven't got that far yet...

EDIT: I also want to add a downloads mod but the only one I've found is outdated but still may work.

Not so feature rich... but maybe I'm just spoiled from using SMF all these years.  ???
Title: Re: My MyBB Project
Post by: Skhilled on May 09, 2015, 12:50:29 PM
Yes, it has less features out-of-the-box but most of those can be added via plugins.
Title: Re: My MyBB Project
Post by: Maxx on May 09, 2015, 01:59:38 PM
Maybe, But it has stuff that SMF does come with, I'll make list when feeling better, and I like the ACP better also more control.. can't wait for the next update!

I real think it just looks less busy due to the layout of things! :) not so many tables windows etc!  much clean and more professional looking if you ask me!~

The other stuff we can work on!

Maxx

Yes, I like the ACP better, too. Atm, I'm trying to get used to the file setup and how to add things to the menu. SMF uses ?action="mod/page" to access pages. MyBB just uses the main .php file associated with the mod or page. For instance, I couldn't get the blog to show in the main menu. After playing with it for a minute, I found that you can just use:

http://docskillz.com/mybblog.php

The menu part of the header template uses variables to access the mods but you can add links. Now, I just need to find the var for it or create my own link. Maybe later I can learn to add it to the mod to fix it so it does it automatically.

Wooooo Hooooooo!  :dancebun:

After more than an hour of trial and error, and a lot of over-thinking the problem  :baghead: , I figured it out.  :rofl1:

<li><a href="{$mybb->settings['bburl']}/mybblog.php">MyBBlog</li>

The other code for adding a menu item was more complicated so I followed along those lines. For instance, this is the one for ezGallery:

<li class="gallery"><a href="{$mybb->settings['bburl']}/ezgallery.php" style="background-image: url({$mybb->settings['bburl']}/images/icons/photo.png);">{$lang->ezgallery_menu}</li>

I tried modifying that to match what I thought would be the correct code for the blog but a simpler approach was needed all along...just like me to over-think things again.  :groan:

EDIT: DVZ Shoutbox installed! I didn't completed the steps.  ???

The mod does not autoinstall it so it will not break anything and you need to manually add 2 more steps listed near the bottom of this page:

Sorry, I was so tired I slept most of the day away. LOL

I have to cook this morning so I'm not sure if I'll get to it today or not. However, I'll use the db from this site as a test merge.

I started for Scratch early this morning, I think I need to go in the DB and Change the smf_ prefix, it import that to the MYBB site. and . At this time I'm reinstalling the Plug ins and Theme again.
Still happy with :)

Completed!  :dancebun:

Here's Docskillz as MyBB:

http://docskillz.com/mybbtest/ (http://docskillz.com/mybbtest/)

You all should be able to login with your same username and passwords.  O0

EDIT: I had one issue where it created a 2nd use with a slightly different name for me but that was easily fixed. It also did not copy the avatars.

I'll play with it a bit more to see if there are any other problems.

I do see strange chars near places where my custom smileys should be. But I expected the custom smileys to not show. Maybe I should have added them first...
Title: Re: My MyBB Project
Post by: Maxx on May 12, 2015, 10:02:37 AM
Yes I had this Also, just edited the post and took them out. I'm sop busy working with MYBB, and so far I'm liking and thinking of dropping some of my SMF site, tired of wait around and getting attitude from those who know everything and do nothing... I also found a cool multi colour responsive theme there, I'm in the process of getting up to date and Google friendly... also found that it's cool to use fonts less that 14px, in you main content, not mobile friend with google and lots peeps complaining their site ranks fell way down do to the new system google has..

I feel bad For SMF and spent many years working and supporting it, those guys are not nice, and stuck on stupid! spending too much time talking down to the community users!

Finding many good things about the MYBB, that are noticeable unless you dig in.. I find mine super fast and it even gives for the server info and resource usage on every page loaded. lts of feature out of plain site!

YUP!

Maxx

I think I can fix a some of the merge issues before you actually do the merge but I need to do a little research and testing. The docs say to disable all mods, etc. first. I did not do that...to save time and see what would happen.

I will do this again but this time I'll disable the mods, themes and will add my custom themes to mybb to match my smf forum. Hopefully, everything should work with maybe only a few minor issues...or none. LOL

If I find any issues I'll report them to mybb support to see if they can fix them. There's also a board there I need to read and see if any fixes are already in it.

Ok Getting Back to this, I'm now test many plug is that so far are all looking good, Forum a few from Vgamer that are working out well, along with many others. finding the full Fledged Template and theme editor, is working real well and let you edit each section of the theme, one by one with an easy edit mode or advanced, I like this, I post How Tos on my new found MYBB software, thanks to Doc for getting me to look at it again!

The forum has all the features I could ask for, but one needs to explore a bit because some are hidden in plain sight, do you need to click to drop down some user options like Profile, normal user feature rather than having them clutter the pages.

Maxx

Since I have off from work until Sunday night I'll play a bit more with the merge. I'll disable all mods and themes and get rid of mod db tables and start over. Since MyBB uses UTF-8 I might convert the forum to that first and see if those strange chars come back or not. I may also need to make sure all of the db tables are utf8 as well.

Looks nice Steve.. Mybb always did have a nice looking skin..

Spam security is excellent on mybb..

One thing I didn't like was I was constantly in and out of the FTP all the time..

Portal sucks, but with a lot of work you can have a nice one in place..

I found mybb to much of a kiddie place, most of the coders are in there early teens..but they are good.

Agreed! You have to upload your mods and themes but that's not a big deal...and the portal does suck. The portal plugins created are outdated too.

And the support is not as crappy as SMF. LOL

I had some good support at mybb, one was about 16 years old smart as a whip..also had euantor, he was a big help, he is a developer..mybb have some nice looking boards out there..

I have no problem with support at smf. Just stay out of Kindred's way, sarcastic as ole heck..runic helps me a lot at times..but he is getting into the Green Party, getting active in it..and then he is in Scotland..

Guess I just play around with the arcade and see if I can get Underdog;s version in..

Don't get me wrong, there are some very nice people at SMF support but the bad ones seem to overshadow them or poke their noses into a topic unnecessarily. This is why so many have left SMF and continue to do so. It not that hard to just answer a question that is asked you instead of putting someone down or the software they are using down. Just help them or stay out of it.

I can see the points you all are bringing up. But...

I'm finding many good things about MyBB, over the SMF, But will take days to explain them all.  As Far as the Portal goes, this option may go down the drain, as far being useful, in the near future of the Mobile  devices dominating the here and not trends, allot of stuff in the portals is over kill and repeats information already in the forum structure it's self. and even if you have  a modest detection, the portal drops and is of no use any way. I had to put all the panels on the top and bottom of the pages, And still looks to busy for the phone and such!
There are still some good people over at SMF, but I feel they will if not already get tire of being stuck on talk! and may way to walk the walk!

I found a few themes that are very nice and done with Bootstrap and very pro looking. SMF is still the same old look and stuck on,while  no one wants to chance. all the dev's that SMF, had that really cared are gone off to do better things with lives and time.

I Like the SMF very much , but I'm getting too old to wait for them to move, and shame on you if ask when :) and the only thing they could do to please me now ,is a complete re writ of the system, so it can move with times, and that ant never gonna happen.

All the people that have support the community, in and outside the site, get the as* every time they say or do anything. I'm not just referring to myself but many others.

The MyBB is done a way that it can be changed, if not by the staff, by the users.
If one digs deep into the mybb, they can or will find the potential it has, or could have.
many thing it has in the out of the box package has been need by smf for many years!

I'm still digging into the Mybb, and will continue and until I know well.

All this.. I'm always looking for something to test and help people find their way and will continue help anyone with what ever system  they choose! If I'm able.

I'm not good at talk, but love work things out :)

Maxx

No, don't get me wrong...I am actually really liking MyBB. I can't wait to see what 2.0 has in-store. I may see if I can download a copy and play with it. I think they have it on github...

And yes, SMF does need a total rewrite. ;)

I've been playing with the 2.1 from the time they first set foot on the moon> http://smf21.surfacethemes.com/

I have done things with what 2.1 + that no one else has or, even wants to talks about. But it's still not up with times and never will be as long as they refuse to except change, and believe me many have tried, and left there because of this.

To me it's looking more like dead horse and I and many have plaid their game too lone!

OK, I've made a 2nd attempt. This time I deleted all mod tables in the db and any extra mod files. I've also ran all forum maintenance then converted the forum to UTF 8.

The results? No more international characters. The only problems still were missing avatars and it still created a new account for me and renamed my old account "Skhilled_old_import1". The last was easily fixed be renaming the new account to something else then renaming "Skhilled_old_import1" to just "Skhilled".

I did copy over the avatars so I'm not sure why they didn't carry over...

EDIT: Calendar events except for birthdays did not convert as well.

I just did a fresh install of the MyBB ( test site) and merged the Buildandtell DB files over all went except,

Some  stay Caricatures and the avatar. bout all the other when though minor nit pick issues. I'm getting better !

Next I need to clean up the B&T DB and un-install all mods the next go around.

Cool stuff to play with.
