These mods will enhance the security of your SMF forum (in no particular order):
reCAPTCHA for SMF (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1044) - Adds a better captcha than the standrd on that is available for SMF. Currently, works with SMF 1.1.9 and 2.0 RC1.1.
Anti-Spam Verification Questions for SMF (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1516) - Allows you to add questions to your registration page to help block spammers. Questions can be changed. Currently, works with SMF 1.1.7 but can be easily modified to work with 1.1.9 via edits to package-info.xml.
Stop Spammer (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1547) - Helps to block the registration of spammers on your forum. Currently, works with SMF 1.1.9 and 2.0 RC1.1.
Add IP2Location to Track IP (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1320) - IP2Location is a commercial service that provides geolocation data based upon IP addresses. This modification adds IP2Location to the list of whois servers on SMF's Track IP page to allow convenient access to the service.
IP2Location allows 20 free queries per day without registration, or you may register for a free demo account and get 200 queries per day. Try them out at the following URL:

I love the IP2Location cause it tells you where users are from. This helps is spammers are coming from a certain country or area. Lately, there have been a huge stream of spammers from the Philippines with IP's starting with 120...
You have to remember that if they are using a proxy it may not be quite as effective.
