Title: Contact Form
Post by: Ronald on August 27, 2015, 09:10:25 AM
I have a Contact Form installed as a page, but trouble is the mail goes through another party..

I see other Contact Forms but they involved more than I am use to doing..

Some call for making file and adding content like html or php along with a css..

When it comes to codes and ftp's I get nervous, I know make a backup, trouble is I have made backups, but have never installed a backup..

Can anyone explain in simple terms how to install a good Contact Form..

Thanks Ron..

Which Contact Form are you using?

Using this one http://www.snaphost.com/captcha/ReadyForms/ContactUsForm.aspx#  but problem is it goes through snaphost first..if I remove there info. I get errors..

This is what it looks like..  http://www.seniorsworldwide.net/index.php?page=page2576

I would like to have one that goes through me or my server..

Ah! I see. Personally, I'd prefer one that doesn't go through another server too. Actually, it's the ".aspx" that would worry me. .asp/.aspx is for Windows servers. Most people like us use linux servers. So, sooner or later there may be conflicts.

I haven't used one here before but have installed a few on other people's servers...but that was a few years ago. I have no idea of any current ones. If SMF does not have any I suggest Googling "php contact form" and find one that has good reviews. I'll help you test it.

Sadly, SMF have very little good and up-to-date mods anymore...

SMF has one Contact Form and it's lousy nothing to it..

There are lots around, but I get confusing where to install the different codes..also I make some changes to suit myself..

I think the modders are waiting for the new beta to become a real forum..

Using one that is not specifically for SMF, can be confusing and can also not work as expected and may need some coding changes. But since SMF doen't have a good one nor an up-to-date one...the PHP ones are your best choice, atm.

Yes, some are waiting for SMF 2.0 but who knows when that will be. Or will it work well and if the modders will actually make mods for it that you will want to use. :P

The future of SMF seems pretty bleak to me. I only keep this site open to help you guys.

I think smf will be around for sometime to come..

You mean the SMF beta or a beta of a Contact Form? Who knows when SMF 2.0 will come out of beta...

I agree, SMF will be around for some time but it will take a lot of time for it to get back to how it used to be...if it ever does.

I have a beta forum like everyone else has.. I try to install some mod.'s some work some don't..

SMF has a Contact Form but what I wanted is one that makes it so you have to add your name and you have to add your email address and have too add this and that..

The one smf have right now you can spam with it..

I could use it, if I could redo parts.but I am not a codder and rely on using other codes to add..to get what I want..

Here is a pretty good contact form http://myphpform.com/final-form.php   it can be redone, but I need to add files that are needed, and this is where I get myself confused..not be use to doing this kind of stuff..

Hmmm, the problem with this is that it does not say where to upload those forms...I assume to your root folder where your forum is. You would just need to change the info: email, etc. to your info and it should work.

You would also need to add a link to contact.php somewhere on your forum so users can use it. The only issue I see with it is that there are no links to redirect a user back to your forum once they complete the contact form. That would require a bit of trial and error to get it in the right spot but shouldn't be hard to do.

Al the other stuff are to be recoded in..

I have looked at the smf contact form and it can be easy enough to recode..maybe I'll look further into it..

I use this:
Contact Page (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=download;mod=377;id=218512)

works great and uses the forum admin email, it also requires guest to verified before submit.

Sorry I was working with the boostrap coding trying incorporate it into SMF themes, What a job!

you can check it inm action at buildandtell.com  on menu "contact"

Maxx

Maxx how can you customize this Contact Form.. I'd like to add some text to it..
Title: Re: Contact Form
Post by: Skhilled on September 01, 2015, 09:25:20 AM
That would depend on where you wish to add the text. If you open contact2.xml in Notepad++ after this part you can see the text that is already available:

<file name="$languagedir/Modifications.english.php">

If you just want to add text right after or before any of those you can just add it in there. But if you want it in a different area then it will be a tad harder.

what did you have in mind. and the text? where?  in the in the form ot out side?

That's the million dollar question...where. Changing the text that is already there or adding to it is very easy. Otherwise, can be a bit tricky unless you know php a little bit.

I would like to add a small banner, a dropdown menu, a short message under the banner..

The one I use now, I have down it as a page on simple portal, which is easy to do.. But the smf form is a wee bit more complicated..one mistake and your out..

Ok, show us a screen shot of the page and where you want to add you banner, etc.

Time for a nap so I'll look at this tomorrow...

This is the page I use now. http://www.seniorsworldwide.net/index.php?page=page2576 click on no need to login and see what I'm using now.. Problem is when you send me a inquirer it comes through "snaphost"

Now here is SMF Contact Us

Title: Re: Contact Form

Please don't take this the wrong way...

Not sure if it's just me, but I really don't see the need for modifications to the Contact form?

If they do not tell me who they are and what they want, I'll not reply to them.

If, I need their last name I'll ask only if I'm interest in the message.
subject is self explanatory,

The message body also, is where they explain what they need to contact me for or questions they need answered, or what ever.

I think making people go through hoops to contact some is not good practice.
If there is any additional info need and I'm inclined to answer, I will ask for it!

Not good to edit to many things in the set code, unless it's done in the next or upcoming version update.

regards,
Maxx

(http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo1/Tutorial_02/contact%20us%20form.png)

Lets see what can be done with this..

If you still wish to do it like this then open /Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php. Find these lines and edit them to your liking...just remember to leave a space at the end of your text.

Find line 35 for Name:

$txt['contact_form_label_name'] = 'Name ';

Find line 42 for Subject:

$txt['contact_form_label_subject'] = 'Subject ';

Find line 34 for Message:

$txt['contact_form_label_message'] = 'Message ';

Now for the banner you would need to edit /Themes/Contact2.template.php about between lines 17 and 18 and add your banner and text message there. Exactly how is a bit tricky for me. I'd have to play around for awhile to get it to work.

For the dropdown menu you'd need to edit lines 24 to 27:

  <tr>
    <td width="28%"" class="windowbg2"><b>',$txt['smfcontact_subject'],'</b></td>
    <td width="72%"" class="windowbg2"><input type="text" name="subject" size="64" /></td>
  </tr>

Again, I'd have to take some time to play with it to get it right as I'm not a real coder.

But this should get you started.  ;D

Forget VBGamer he is to busy, he took over the arcade and can't even update that, says he has no time, of course he is not getting any money from the mod..

He also is involved in the MYBB group with codes and mod.'s..

I have codes for a drop down menu, but I may shorten it to only 3 or 4 reasons and use a check box, or as Maxx says leave it alone..

Need the recaptcha or a easy one like smf uses, and make sure things are required..

I am using the Advanced Contact Form right now, seems to work good, comes from my server now and this is what I wanted..

It may be easier if you post your /Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php. You should also remember to use the same capital letters for spelling you see here or you will get blank pages.

Use Modifications.english.php not modifications.english.php...make sure you save it that way.

I edited a few lines so the Name, Subject, and Message parts worked as you wanted. Keep in mind that it works just like a text file and only shows text. It will not affect anything else.
